Most states recognize and require the standards of competency set forth by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. Furthermore, the Commonwealth of Virginia requires that each practitioner obtain a license as a "Certified Massage Therapist" before they may practice in Virginia. Massage Therapy falls under the jurisdiction of the Virginia Board of Nursing.

Local jurisdictions also regulate massage therapy. In Fairfax County, Virginia, this falls under the Consumer Protection Division. Note that other counties, cities, and towns WILL HAVE DIFFERENT regulations for consumer protection regarding massage therapy.
